PUSHING WITH A DIASTASIS
Diastasis recti can make pushing in labour very difficult to do. When the muscles separate the weakened connective tissue is now supporting the uterus instead of the muscles if they were together. The uterus, being top heavy from the growing baby, will thus tilt forward. When it tilts forward the cervix will move out of alignment with the vaginal canal creating a detour in the babies passage through the birth canal.
PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM
The Tupler Technique® educates women in the art of 'perfect pushing'. We teach you how to push with strengthened and splinted abdominal muscles while relaxing your pelvic floor muscles that you have conditioned and gently stretched throughout the pregnancy. Not only does pushin gin this way help to get the baby out faster, it also prevents your diastasis from getting larger and it also limits the damage to the pelvic floor muscles.
Just like running a marathon, pushing during the marathon of labour is a learned skill - and one that requires practice. It's very difficult to practice a new skill when you are in pain! Pushing correctly must be learned and practiced during pregnancy so it becomes second nature during labour.
The best starting point for this program is to watch the Tupler Technique® Perfect Pushing™ DVD. Even if you plan to work with a licensed provider of the Tupler Technique® it is still very beneficial to watch this DVD. If you watch it before your first session, whether it is a private session or a class, it will make it much easier to understand the program, because of the intricate and detailed information involved. If you come prepared with a basic understanding of the program, you will be much more successful in getting the results you want.
RESULTS
Published research from Columbia University's Department of Physical Therapy Program proved that pregnant women who followed the Tupler Technique® had a smaller diastasis than the control group of pregnant women who did not follow the program - in fact in 90% of pregnant women their diastasis became smaller as their bellies got bigger!
Having a smaller diastasis during pregnancy from doing the Tupler Technique® resulted in many anecdotal benefits: No back pain or disappearance of back pain; faster and more effective pushing in labour; faster recovery of abdominal muscles; and, quicker recovery from a C-section.
At The Belly Firm private workshops, our clients are checked for a diastasis at the first, second and third class and their measurements recorded. We take the time to ensure you know exactly how to do the exercises and we make sure you understand how and why these exercises will help you to push more effectively during labour. By following the Tupler Technique® Perfect Pushing™ program you will not only prepare your body for the marathon of labour you will also be setting yourself up for a quick and easy physical recovery post-birth.
SPLINTING DURING PREGNANCY
Women can wear a splint during their pregnancy. If they are uncomfortable wearing this, they can just hold a splint when doing the seated and back lying exercises starting in week four of the program. It is especially important to hold a splint when pushing in labour as bringing the muscles together will put the uterus in the proper position.
